Sexy versions of the Bavarian Dirndl dress with low cut blouses and ridiculously short hemlines are increasingly worn by tipsy tourists joining the six million revellers at the famous festival in Munich every September
STEIN swilling female tourists who flock to Oktoberfest for a knees up are being slammed for wearing outrageous versions of the traditional Bavarian dress.
Cultural leaders believe much of what is being worn is becoming more and more like a porno version of the buxom dress called the dirndl.
The Times reports Franz Thalhammer, 70, an accordionist and former chairman of Munich’s Georgenstoana Baierbrunn folk group, moaning to a local newspaper about how the costume bares no resemblance to the real thing.
He said: “A dirndl is something nice, it can make almost anyone pretty.
“But some of the dresses you see these days are crazy.”
A Munich based crime author also waded into the debate, saying: “With the young women it often looks like porno dresses, short and low-cut and cheap material.”
The number of people sporting Bavarian folk costumes to the world’s biggest beer festival, which starts on September 22, has boomed in the past ten years.
Fancy dress shops in Britain said customers preferred sexier versions.
Ulku Stephanides, who has run the Carnival Store in Kensington, west London, told the Times: “For women, we have either knee-length or shorter than knee-length dresses. People used to have a normal size.
“Now, because models are wearing these costumes, the girls come to the shop and they say: ‘I want to look sexy’.”
