Some of the most powerful and wealthy men and women in the world will soon converge on Sun Valley Resort for the annual Allen & Co. conference, which will be held July 11-16 this year.
The Allen & Co. conference has established itself as a leading power-brokering event for the world’s elite billionaires and business and technology leaders. Past attendees include Microsoft founder Bill Gates, former New York City Mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg, investment titan Warren Buffett and Apple CEO Tim Cook, who during his attendance in 2016 was the leader of the world’s most valuable brand. According to Forbes, Apple was valued at $154.1 billion that year.
Deals forged at the event in the past include Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos’ purchase of The Washington Post, and Time Warner’s ill-fated merger with AOL. With an estimated net worth of $85.4 billion, Bezos is the world’s second-richest person, following Gates.
New York City-based investment firm Allen & Co. began holding its eponymous conference in Sun Valley in 1983.
The event is shrouded in secrecy, with tight security and even tighter lips on those with insider details on the event. Invitations are beyond exclusive, and members of the press and public have restricted access at the resort.
According to Variety magazine, this year’s invitees include 21st Century Fox Chairman Rupert Murdoch, Netflix Chief Creative Officer Ted Sarandos, Oprah Winfrey, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, PayPal Co-Founder Peter Thiel and technology innovator Elon Musk.
Political figures who received invitations include Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Council on Foreign Relations President Richard Haass.
Cook, Buffet and Gates are also on the list again this year as well, Variety reported.
Of course, an invitation to Allen & Co. does not equate to attendance, and some previous attendees will not be making the trip to Sun Valley. According to Bloomberg News, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger is not on the list of attendees this year, but TV division co-chairman Ben Sherwood, CFO Christine McCarthy and Chief Strategy Officer Kevin Mayer are all on the list.
Travis Kalanick, the former Uber CEO who resigned June 20 amid headline-making rumors of discrimination, sexual harassment and driver exploitation within the ride-sharing app company, will not attend Allen & Co. this year, Bloomberg reported, stating that it was unclear whether he chose not to attend or was not invited.
Chris Pomeroy, manager of Friedman Memorial Airport, said the airport has hired a consultant to help plan and coordinate the air space above Friedman during the conference, as many private planes take off and land in addition to commercial service. He said the consultant’s work won’t involve actual air-traffic-control duties.
