The wife of a Republican congressman in California died in December due to “adverse effects” caused by the consumption of an herbal supplement, according to an autopsy conducted by Sacramento County.

Lori McClintock, the wife of Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), died after suffering from “dehydration due to gastroenteritis due to adverse effects of white mulberry leaf ingestion,” according to the two-page autopsy report obtained by the Washington Examiner. She was 61 years old.

Lori McClintock was found unresponsive by her husband inside their locked residence on Dec. 15, 2021, according to reports. An autopsy with toxicology testing confirmed the cause was due to the herbal supplement, and the death was ruled not suspicious.

It’s not clear from the report when or how Lori McClintock ingested the mulberry leaf, but the autopsy report indicated she had made complaints about an upset stomach the day before she was found dead.

The white mulberry leaf is considered safe to ingest, and it can typically be taken in tea, as a pill, or as an extract. No deaths from mulberry ingestion have been reported to poison control in the last decade, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

“Our family’s darkest day and most terrible nightmare has come. Lori is gone,” the McClintock family said in a statement at the time of her death. “We are devastated and our world is shattered. Only those who knew her can understand the enormity of the tragedy of her passing for her family and many friends.”

Tom Clintock’s office did not respond to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner asking about his wife’s autopsy report.
